Why did Sunrisers Hyderabad spend Rs 20.5 crore for Pat Cummins?

Former Indian captain and coach Anil Kumble believes that Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins got such a huge amount in the IPL auction for his captaincy skills. Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Cummins for Rs 20.5 crore. Apart from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings had also bid for Cummins. This is why the bid reached so high.

World Cup-winning captain

World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan believes Cummins deserves credit for the Australian national team’s recent success as captain. Morgan said, ‘The kind of bowler Pat Cummins is and the success he has had in the last one and a half years is fantastic. Apart from captaining the team that won the World Test Championship, as a bowler he helped England retain the Ashes. Then gave another ODI World Cup to the Australian team.

Morgan said, ‘Cummins has received such a huge amount considering his recent form and confidence. This is also an issue of demand and supply. Some teams are looking for leadership roles not only as captain but also in the changing room. Therefore Pat Cummins completely justifies his price. Currently the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad is Aiden Markram. However, his team’s performance last season was very poor. The team was at the bottom 10th position in the points table with four wins and 10 losses in 14 matches.

With the winning bid, Cummins became the highest-ever buy in the history of IPL but he was soon surpassed by compatriot Mitchell Starc, who fetched a new all-time IPL auction record of ₹24.75 crore.
